Alternator Should I just back away?

    Brand new to this forum.
Don't own an Aprilia yet.... and may not! At least not this one.

Read in this forum that bikes with engine numbers pre 8176929 MAY have suspect alternators.

Found a nice clean low mile 08' Tuono with engine number (as emailed from the owner)

    ROTAX U990RR 8138307

In your opinion(s).... Should I step away from the motorbike, and search elsewhere?

Of course the owner claims he has had zero electrical issues (and I have no reason to doubt him...) Bike has under 6000 miles.

ANY feedback would be greatly appreciated!

    Hmmmm...
49 views this morning and zero comments.

Does this mean there are scads of you guys riding around with 500w alternators with no issues and you think I'm just a nervous Nellie?

    Or...

Does this mean everyone agrees this is just a ticking bomb waiting to leave me in the boondocks somewhere?

My generator has just gone, its an 07, going to cost a bit in parts. but the last 2 bikes I've owned have also burnt out stators ( a K1 Gixxer 750 and a D7 zx10r) the 10r was the most expensive for parts. I'm not an expert on Aprilia, I've not owned the bike long, but based on personal experience it doesn't seem any less reliable than a jap bike of the same age.
After all its 10 years old, if you need reliable buy new.
Can't help with which stator you have, but the newer 1 is generally regarded to be more reliable, but i think you also need to replace the flywheel for it to fit.
    Hope that helps.

    Smile

Replaced my stator twice now.... original lasted 18k , Ricks replacement lasted 12k.

Do I regret buying this bike... No.

If a started again, then ideally I would pick the newest I could find.

"But" for me overall condition would make the decision for me rather than any one item.

Realisticly, how many miles are you likely to do...

If it is the right bike for you and your only concern is a stator & Rotor .... price that up and factor that into the price he wants and what it is worth to you.

    Note:
"cheap" fix is a stator, gasket , oil & filter so around $200. So less than a pair of tyres.... and hopefully lasts a bit longer...

"Expensive" fix ie: a genuine Ape Stator & Rotor is over $1,500 from AF1 in the states..... + oil etc... ( you can get them cheaper tho...

    And various options in between...

Ape's are no different to any manufacturer... they all can have issues. (Most unreliable bike I have owned was a Honda xl125 !)

Good look with you search and make sure you stick some pics up when you buy one !

Buy it, with just 6000m it should be ok. If it does go bang fix it, but at the end of the day they are wicked bikes and you will love it!! Mine is in garage at mo with a problem, but will sort it and love it lol

Like anything else you buy , things are going to fail . If you want one shop around and go for the one you think the best.
The one I`ve had for years was a Cat C (bodywork) , sorted then the fuel pump had problems ............sorted It`s what you do...
My other "T" had stood for almost a year but the stator/alternator has been done ..........................
    ACE bikes.....

I can concur with all the above statements !! buy the bike if its clean an all other servicing has been done , I have owned mine for 6 years now and recently had the stator burn out some 800 mile from home !!

cost me 450 + E150 for recovery , which was by far the most traumatic experience of ownership the parts cost me 350 all in to repair .

bike is back on the road and I have still no regrets and so far nothing has tempted me away ( not including the 2019 Suzuki katana )

but that is unlikely to be an issue due to the cost !!!.

all in all I would thoroughly recommend .

I had an 06 model for 4 years and did about 18k miles on it.
Only problems I had were misting of th clocks, not too much, and needed to bleed the clutch once a year to keep it sweet. Oh and the back brake was not that good.
